HIV AWARENESS AND SEX EDUCATION

  • A diverse team of 14 “peer educators” – a combination of Vumilia staff and community volunteers – spread life-changing information and counsel individuals in their demographic group
  • Seven of these are community outreach volunteers who deliver more formal information sessions to large groups at schools, churches, community groups, and workers such as transporters.
  • Over an intense six week period in 2008, these educators reached over 2,500 people in the community.
  • Vumilia is the only provider of this kind of specific sex education in Kabras.

SEX EDUCATION PROGRAM

Vumilia has trained a team of 11 people who go out in the community to teach HIV/AIDS awareness and sex education to middle and high school students, women's groups, support groups, church groups at the invitation of schools and local chiefs. In these set of forums we teach people on how the culture do affects us and how we can remove some of the beliefs about our culture which are affecting us in the era of HIV/AIDS like wife inheritance and polygamy and  certain types of transactional sex, myths of HIV and condoms, etc.  Kathy Bradish www.bradishkenya.com  a volunteer with Vumilia and other organization in Kenya has worked tirelessly with 11 team members to ensure that the program is running and the community is getting enough knowledge of sex education especially the youth.
