The Green House Project
With the help of John Deere, Vumilia has started a new project to help generate extra income to support the Children’s Home.

The Green House Project was initiated after a 2 day visit from John Deere who donated the Green House, seeds, farm tools, food and firewood, as well as T-Shirts for the Vumilia Children and staff.

During their visit the John Deere Team not only helped set up the Green House, but also helped plough the land, split firewood and involved the children in many practical tasks such as cooking and pumping water to the farm and kitchen, as well as running sporting activities, games and reading tuition classes.

The new Green House has a total of 6 beds, each measuring 2ft x 45ft. This is a long term project but the future projections are great in terms of the possible results and benefits for Vumilia, and the team are excited and determined to make it a success.

The project, as with all new enterprises, has not been without its challenges, which have included some early problems with a bacterial infestation in the soil. But these issues have already been resolved ready for the next planting season, and despite these early problems, benefits have already been seen, with a good crop of tomatoes this year that has helped feed the Children and has also raised extra income for Vumilia at the local market.

Rosey Adkin & Stefanie Tague visited the Vumilia project in 2011 to produce a film as part of their degree course for a UK University. They were eager to produce an film that represented the harsh reality of a culture so different from their own, but also address the causes and effects of HIV, and the effects of poverty and poor education.

“The film is intended to help raise awareness and find sustainable solutions for HIV prevention.” Rosey Adkin

Can you help Vumilia grow food for its future?

The farm manager has been busy this week carefully transplanting tomato plant seedlings into the greenhouse. This is an important part of our effort to grow a sustainable and healthy future for the project. Can you help us achieve this?

– We currently need funds for Fertilizer and Seed for other crops such as Maize and Beans.

A visit from the Educate Global Fund

If more evidence was needed of Vumilia’s powerful work, and the help it needs to continue that work, it can be found here: Educate Global Fund visited the Vumilia Children’s Home recently, as part of their larger study in East Africa, and they wrote this about their visit:

Girls back to school…

Our girls returned to schooling this week, with our secondary students traveling to their boarding schools, and our primary students returning to their home-schooling classroom! We are so thankful to be able to offer a good education to our girl children, to give them opportunities and knowledge that will help them throughout their lives!

Growing Stronger!

Remember Wilson, the boy featured in a picture about our palliative care program? Today, he is healthy and strong, running about, smiling and laughing! The work that Vumilia strives to do can be very hard and tiresome, but it is moments like seeing Wilson running about the dirt road, giggling madly that makes it all worth it! Without Vumilia’s care, he might not have made it through a tough bought of malaria and TB. Today, we celebrate that he is alive, and happy, and getting healthier!
